IBM made a technological breakthrough in 2011 when a supercomputer Watson won among the champions of the game show “Jeopardy”. And now the company wants to restart their high-end Power servers by use graphics processor.
From the next year IBM will start using graphics processors Tesla of Nvidia Company in servers with Power chips with the help of which such supercomputers like Watson and Seqoia and others of that kind exist.
As for the characteristics, new K40 has 2880 CUDA cores and is based on graphics memory GDD5 with frequency 3 GHz. The basic version Tesla K40 has 12 GB memory. And a new processor Power8 is produced according to 22-d SOI techprocess, contains 12 GD of cores which work on frequency up to 4 GHz, 12x0,5 MB of cache of the second level and 96 MB of shared cache of the third level (eDRAM).
These 2 corporations made an agreement and it will unite a new GPU Tesla K40 and processor IMB Power8 which is being prepared for release.
The alliance between IBM and Nvidia will not only increase our chances to hear about amazing records in the computer world, but will also help to business-partners to process and analyze data more quickly (and it is highly important for such tasks like processing of the finance transactions)
